The 16th of August, 2019, marked the inauguration of the ACM SVCE Student Chapter for the academic year 2019 – 2020. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr. Chandrasekhar Balasubramanian, Business Head of Futurnet, who enthused the audience with realistic business strategies that are very much essential to thrive in the corporate world. He concluded his speech after having an interactive Q&A session with the audience.

The Tech Quiz was based on technological trends and facts was conducted on 1st October, 2019. It was divided into 4 different rounds. The quiz started off with the Quizmaster, explaining the rules and the format. The first round consisted of questions over a variety of fields which have been in the news recently. The questions in this round related to everything from AMDs recent Zen Architecture and the uproar behind it to cryptocurrency millionaires, Boston Dynamics Spot Mini robot and the recent Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities. The second round was a logo round with logos that the teams were asked to identify. This round was followed by a Connect and a debugging round where in the teams were presented with a series of images and were asked to connect them to a specific language, company, technology or person. Overall, there were 40 teams of 2 evenly spread across the all years. A majority of the participants praised the selection of questions and stated that they acquired new knowledge that they wouldn’t have normally encountered.

Additionally, the members of last year's chapter were felicitated and were encouraged to continue working with the current chapter.

A Hackathon is where crazy ideas turn into reality. The SVCE-ACM Student Chapter in collaboration with the SVCE Alumni Association conducted Yet Another Hackathon (YAH! 2K’18) on the 18th and 19th of August 2018 at Ascendas IT Park. From over 450 participants spanning a staggering 157 teams, the top 27 teams were selected based on an online screening test which tested both their ideation as well as their product development skills.

The judging panel had an incredibly tough time deciding the winners which reflected the high standard of performance by the all the teams. In the end, they chose the victors – Team SSNsCreed consisting of Sundararaman, Vishal Gupta and Shrikanth from SSN College of Engineering. They bagged Rs. 30,000 in cash. The runner-ups were team AI Enthusiasts comprising of Ayush Parasbhai Maniar, Pawar Pranav Dayanand and Singhal Rajat Vikas, from IIT Madras. In addition, there were also prizes for the Best UI, Best Idea, Best Feature, Most Feasible Product and People's Choice Award.

Interrupt is a National Level Technical Symposium organized by the Computer Science Department of Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering. For over 25 years, Interrupt has always kept students on their toes, eagerly waiting to experience its thrill and grandeur. This year, on the 29th of September, Technofair was conducted as a part of the SVCE-ACM Student Chapter initiative – an event where the participants are provided with a certain number of points as soon as they register, enabling them to trade their points to participate in the various mini events, thereby grabbing the chance to gain more points and win exciting goodies.

Technofair had a total of 10 exciting mini events, each of them being unique in their own special way. Having such a wide plethora of fun-filled technical events, Technofair gave its participants a wide variety of opportunities to choose from. While events tend to get boring and monotonous at times, this was one such event which never lost its element of excitement, which was undoubtedly the driving factor behind its huge success!

Knowledge is always meant to be shared. On the 4th of September 2018, a guest lecture on Virtualization was conducted by Mr. Ashok Lakshmichandran, Founder & CEO of Futurenet Technologies. He spoke about Virtualization and cloud and its benefits. He also spoke of how Virtualization applied into real world scenarios and how students can make a career out in it highlighting Vmware's role in Virtualization. He concluded his lecture with an interactive Q&A session with the audience, thereby enabling the students to get their doubts clarified and to get a better understanding about Virtualization as a whole. On the whole, the event proved to be a grand success.

An online event, A December Of Algorithms, was conducted throughout the month of December, with an aim to help the participants conquer the world of algorithms, once and for all. The participants were provided with algorithms and tools associated with the problem to help them improve their ability to comprehend and implement algorithms. In the process, it also taught them to use Github and make their first pull request. Participants who implemented all 31 algorithms successfully were provided with Certificates of Appreciation. The event was successful, helping many participants work their way through algorithms. The github repository can be found here.

Calibration is an event specially conducted for the freshers every year to find new talent and their interests. For this year's calibration, the ACM student chapter organized many programs, including a Game Designing event. This event consisted of two round. The students had to pitch their game ideas and explain them thoroughly in the first round and the second round consisted of a real-time Q&A session with the judges, where each of the designers were questioned based on their previous round presentations. The event was a grand success with enthusiastic students displaying healthy competition and active participation.

Calibrations serves its purpose to initiate interaction between the first year students and the senior students. On the 15th of September 2018, a gaming event was conducted by the students of the SVCE- ACM chapter as a part of Calibrations 2k18. The gaming event was conducted in-order to encourage the growing spark about the trending computer and video games in the young minds. For this event, the participants were gathered to play FIFA, one of the most popular games on the market right now. The event served as an opportunity to do a small scale talent search among those newly admitted in our institution. This event went on successfully with a great turnout of participants

The SVCE-ACM Student Chapter conducted a webinar, Avenues To Explore, on the 22nd of December 2018 which featured Mr. Tarun Chinmai, an Alumini of the SVCE ACM Student Chapter, currently pursuing his Masters Degree at Arizona State University. The webinar aimed to help students get a better understanding of the various avenues in Computer Science. The speaker started the webinar with an introduction to computers and a few insights into various domains which constitute Computer Science. He proceeded to explain the importance of certain fields and elucidated their role in the developement of sustainable technology. The webinar also featured tips on howto decide on a specific domain, wherein the students were advised to understand the nuances present in each field, whilst exposing themselves to hands-on experience before deciding on a certain field. Following this, he provided various tips on how to tackle college placements as well. The webinar came to a conclusion with an interactive Q and A session.The diverse breadth of questions put-forth by the 100+ viewers across colleges in India served as a paragon to the success of the event.

On the 30th of July, 2018, we conducted a series of talks for the third years of the CS department. Titled “Option A ah Option B ah”, the final year students of the chapter spoke to the third years about their own experiences with “Option A” – the choice to sit for placements and/or search independently for jobs as well as with “Option B” – electing to opt for higher studies instead. Instead of having the talk for a wide audience spanning multiple classrooms, the chapter decided to speak to each class one at a time. This allowed for a more personal session and lead to greater interactivity. This event helped the pre-final year students to gain some clarity on the direction they're headed at after completing their UG.

Code storm was an event conducted by the SVCE-ACM student chapter for all the second and third year students of all departments of SVCE. Its aim was to create a healthy competitive environment for students to showcase their coding talent. The first round of the event was an online coding round, conducted on the hackerearth platform. It had 10 questions and the participants had a time of two hours to solve them. The top 30 students from the first round were selected for the second round. The second round was hosted on the hackerrank coding platform and was held on campus. The event had nearly 100 participants in the first round and the second round had a group of 30 very enthusiastic participants from many departments and belonging to both second year and third year. This event broke the barriers between all the departments and all ages when it comes to coding.

The SVCE ACM Student Chapter conducted DISRUPT 19’, a 2-day technology based debate, open to students of all departments. The debate followed a One-On-One format with students across 2nd and 3rd year pitted against each other. Each debate consisted of two segments with the first segment focusing on the constructive arguments trioOfWisdom followed by a ‘Rebuttal’ segment focusing on contesting the opponent’s reasoning(s). The preliminary round was conducted on 15th February 2019 and was aimed to serve as a platform for spirited students to demonstrate their critical thinking skills and enhance their ability to make well-reasoned arguments whilst questioning the evidence behind a particular stance.The students were shortlisted by a panel of judges and these selected students progressed to the qualifier round(s) which was conducted on 22nd February 2019. The final round was judged by Dr. Murugavel, Head of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. The fierce battle of words culminated with Kaaviya Baskaran and Yagna bagging the winner and runner-up slots respectively. The vigorous competition displayed by the students ensured that each participant brought out the best in them in a sportive manner whilst maintaining the decorum of the event. All-inclusive the debate was well received and appreciate d by the 50+ enthusiastic participants who ensured they left no stone unturned.

In support of women empowerment and having in mind the importance of women representation in STEM fields, ACM SVCE conducted a seminar cum panel discussion, during Women’s week, 2019. The event, “Trio Of Wisdom” showcased three great orators, who addressed the set of girl students in the second, third and fourth years of CSE and IT Departments.
The first speaker, Ms. Sowmya Mahadevan, COO, Exeter Premedia Services, spoke about the need for women to excel at Technical domains, and stressed on the importance of girls learning to code. She also spoke about her own experience in the Tech Industry and explained how important it is for young girls to focus on their career. This session was very informative as she was our alma mater’s very own alumni and the students could connect with her a lot better.The second speaker, Ms. JinaPriya AjithaDoss,an HR Professional, spoke about how women can become more employable and what they need to do in-order to excel in their respective careers. She gave us an insight on what we need to work on, as undergraduate students, to become potentially skillful candidates. This was truly an eye opening session.The third speaker, Ms. Nandita Pandey, Personal Branding Coach, shared her life story on how she struggled in the initial phase of her career and how she successfully started a business. Her entrepreneurial story inspired many young women. Following the seminar by the three speakers, we had a panel discussion where students were able to interact and ask the speakers questions. The panel discussion was held to discuss the struggles faced by girl students and talk about women empowerment in STEM. The event had an attendance of 100 students and faculty from CSE and IT Departments.The event on the whole was well received by both the students and faculty.

This webinar was focused upon bringing women into the field of Computer Science, skills one can equip to be an entrepreneur and freelancing in Computer Science. The webinar was handled by the Founders of CodeFemme. With over 250 participants across colleges, this initiative turned out to be an universal eye-opening session.

Internships are a fantastic way to gain some hands-on work experience. Having good grades is of utmost importance, but landing on an internship is probably more important to get the most out of it. The SVCE ACM student chapter organised the InternFair for students from the department of Computer Science and Information Technology.The students had to code optimal solutions for the given question in a given amount of time in the hackerrank and the hackerearth sites.The best of the lot were given opportunities to have interview sessions in top notch companies.This event was a huge success,benefitting many.

The 25th of July, 2017, marked the inauguration of the ACM SVCE Student Chapter for the academic year 2017 - 2018. The Chief Guest for the event was Mr Rajesh Padmanabhan, Founder and CEO of NFN Labs, who enthused the audience with a realistic but motivating outlook on life, technology and entrepreneurial spirit. Additionally, the members of last year's chapter were felicitated and were encouraged to continue working with the current chapter.

The aim was to provide student-sourced guidance to other students on attaining maximum success in placement interviews. The event kick started with a mock coding round, followed by an interactive session where students who had already been offered jobs at companies such as Dell shared their valuable experience in interviews and answers to commonly asked programming questions. The event was a success, with each participant getting a confidence boost.

The Association of Computing Machinery, the Association of Computer Engineers and the iGEM Team of SVCE came together to organize the Inheritance Hack - a one of a kind interdisciplinary hackathon on Synthetic Biology that requires a Computer Science Application. This hackathon was conducted in Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering on the 26th and 27th of August, 2017. 8 teams consisting of 2-3 members each took part in this hackathon. Each team was to make an educational app, based on riboswitches or biobrick assembly within a time period of 24 hours. Finally, each team’s app was judged by Dr. Ravi Kant from Saksin and the team which had made the best, most efficient app was awarded with a cash prize of Rs.15000. The main aim of this event was to enable the participants to collaborate and learn beyond their specialized course of curriculum. This unique opportunity enthralled the participating teams more than anything else resulting in a befitting grand success.

A technology based debate, Discord, was conducted by the SVCE ACM Student Chapter. on 21st September, 2017. This debate was open to 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students from all over the college. 14 people participated in this event. The main aim of this event was to ensure that students learn to stand up for themselves and for what they believe in because that’s what it takes to succeed in the corporate world. These top notch debates were well received and appreciated by a sizeable and enthusiastic audience that served as strong encouragement to all the participants. The debate had multiple rounds. The best participants were filtered out and made to debate against each other in the final round. Joshua Samuel and Chaitra emerged as the winner and the runner up. The outstanding highlight of this event was the depth of research and analysis that participants had done on their topics - they truly left no stone unturned.

A Web Development workshop was conducted as a part the Computer Science Symposium of Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, Interrupt, by the SVCE ACM Student Chapter on 25th September 2017. The workshop focused on LAMP Stack. The various students attending the workshop were asked to setup an apache server along with a database and were taught the basics of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and SQL with the help of simple, crisp examples. Bootstrap Framework was discussed elaborately since it is one of the most commonly used frameworks for building a responsive website. The workshop also touched upon various other concepts in a more theory oriented way such as Ajax for asynchronous server requests, hosting/deployment of a website and various other languages currently being used in the industry. A Portfolio Website was prepared to demonstrate the interaction between the frontend and backend of Web development thereby enabling the participants to get a hands on experience.

The Hour of Code is a global movement designed to generate excitement in young people about programming and technology. Games, tutorials, and other events are organized during the Computer Science Education Week every year between December 4th and 10th. This year, the ACM Student Chapter of SVCE decided to contribute their part to this global initiative by conducting a participatory workshop in Don Bosco School on 4th December 2017. About 40 students from 9th and 10th grades attended the event. An interactive tutorial (from the hourofcode.com) which focuses on the basics of Python, was used to ensure a great learning experience for the students. It had a chatter bot, named Eliza, explain the basic concepts of Python such as input, print and loop statements. The students then tried their hand at coding with some guidance from the ACM volunteers. The students were more than just excited with the tutorial sessions and the hands on experience. They participated passionately and gained reasonable expertise on the fundamental concepts of Python. The workshop thereby succeeded in giving students a head start for their future endeavors. They were actually able to widen their knowledge about coding and thus the essence of Hour of Code was achieved.

On 28th December 2017, a technical lecture on block chain was conducted by Mr. Tarun Chinmai, a blockchain enthusiast and a software developer at Akamai. The session started off with an introduction on what the blockchain is, some information about its mysterious creator and the reasoning behind its creation. He then touched on the most popular cryptocurrencies with brief explanations on each of them. The lecture included demos of the blockchain ledger system as well as a clear explanation of the hash functions involved and the concept of 'mining'. Tarun also debunked the many myths about blockchain. He then went into an in depth explanation on Merkel trees and their uses in the blockchain. It ended with an interactive Q&A session with questions involving everything from Mt. Gox to whether they should invest in cryptocurrency.

A non-technical quiz based on technological trends and facts was conducted on 16th February, 2018. It was divided into 4 different rounds. The quiz started off with the Quizmaster, Akash Saravanan explaining the rules and the format. After a trick question to put the crowd at ease, the quiz began with an energized audience. The first round consisted of questions over a variety of fields which have been in the news recently. The questions in this round related to everything from Snapchat’s recent design update and the uproar behind it to cryptocurrency millionaires, Boston Dynamics’ Spot Mini robot and the recent Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities. The second round was a logo round with 15 logos that the teams were asked to identify. This round was followed by a “Connect” round wherein the teams were presented with a series of images and were asked to connect them to a specific language, company, technology or person. The final round was an exciting 20 question round on technology, both new and old. Overall, there were 18 teams of 2 evenly spread across the 2nd and 3rd years. Ultimately, CoreML consisting of Gurudutt P. and Chran S. of the 3rd year came out as the winner by a narrow margin. The event was a very informational and exciting session for all the participants and they requested more quizzes to be conducted. A majority of the participants praised the selection of questions and stated that they acquired new knowledge that they wouldn’t have normally encountered.

A game of unspeakable fun and naming technology which should not be named, Tech Taboo, was conducted as a Women’s Day special event by the SVCE ACM Student Chapter on March 9th, 2018. A total of 29 girls participated in this tech game, who were split up into 10 teams. The main aim of this event was to encourage women to explore the depths of technology in the most fun-filled way possible. All of the teams participated with a lot of enthusiasm and excitement. In the end, the team consisting of Adela Florence, Brammi.J and Dhivya.R from 2nd year, CSE-A emerged as the winning team. This was a fun-filled tech event which pushed people to not only use their tech knowledge, but also their wit and presence of mind.

Lorem Ipsum was started on January 7th 2018. This is a monthly newsletter that we send out to the students of SVCE, which is a curated collection of articles and video links, with feature articles written by the newsletter team, and a section dedicated to discovering start-ups. We've gotten over 300 subscribers over the months.

An online technology based debate, Breach, was conducted on the Discord App by the SVCE ACM Student Chapter on 2nd October, 2017. This event was exclusive to the first year students, from all the departments, of Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering in order to nurture them to be strong individuals. 10 people participated in this event. The main aim of this event was to ensure that the students learn to analyze any given topic objectively and holistically because that's what makes them stand out of the crowd and outshine. The debate had multiple rounds. The best participants were filtered out and made to debate against each other in the final round. Hariharan.B from 1st year, ECE-A and Kaaviya Baskaran from 1st year, IT-A emerged as the winner and the runner up. The unique success factor that came out throughout this debating event was the fact that all participants focused on positive arguments and rebuttals rather than putting down the competition.

A 4 hour long coding test was conducted on 6th January 2018 in association with the placement cell of the college. The test was held on the HackerRank platform with a total of 103 students of the CS and IT branches participating. The questions were of varying difficulties with the easiest requiring a student to find the maximum of 4 numbers and the toughest asking them to reverse a linked list. The test was scored out of 200 points with two students managing to get the perfect score. Based on a combination of the results of this test, student feedback and discussion with faculty members, a coding development programme was established.

A coding development programme was conducted for the 3rd year CS and IT students of the college from February 1st 2018 to March 31st 2018 in association with the placement cell of the college. It consisted of 110 students who were split into categories based on their mastery of programming. Ample resources in the form of YouTube lectueres, ebooks and interactive tutorials were provided to the students to learn more about topics given for the week. To aid with their learning, an assignment was given every week as well with questions based on the topic of the week. This way the students were able to both learn and do at the same time. At the end of the programme, a final test on HackerRank will be conducted with questions based on the topics covered during the programme. Based on the category, topics covered started from conditional statements and went as far as linked lists and advanced sorting algorithms like merge sort and quick sort.
